Dr. Bernard "Bernie" Steinau Collection

Dr. Bernard Meyer “Bernie” Steinau (1927-2002) was born in New Orleans. He was a student at LSU in 1947 when he started listening to Sharkey Bonano’s band at the Parisian Room on weekend forays home. For the next several years, as time allowed, he followed the local jazz scene in the company of Richard B. Allen and other aficionados. Between 1950 and 1952, when he took his medical degree, Steinau photographed numerous parades, funerals, and other events where jazz was played; including the iconic 1951 Eureka Brass Band recording session in the 1500 block of St. Philip Street.
